On May 30, 1975, a fire broke out in a chimney flue on the second floor of the east wing and spread to the surrounding roof structure.
About two-thirds of the castle’s roof was destroyed, along with the attics below it.
The fire also ravaged the Renaissance rooms on the first floor of the east wing.
To extinguish the fire threatening the entire castle, firefighters hosed down the building for more than twenty-four hours; the first floor and then the ground floor were subsequently flooded with 40 cm of water, which had to be pumped out.
Initially, a corrugated metal roof was installed, and then the roofs of the two wings were rebuilt in the late 1980s thanks to the generous support of the Friends of Vieilles Maisons Françaises.
The Amboise tower is currently covered by a concrete terrace and no longer offers visitors a view of its former pointed roof.
